Where should I put commands to start VDR at boot. Putting them in /etc/rc.boot is no good because lircd has not started yet. VDR needs to be the last thing to start at bootup.

If you just want the box to shut down, use vdr command line options for a shutdown command.
For initscripts, I installed runit to speed up the boot. Then vdr is there as just one service.
